[edit] ekd

pyqt4, does some basic editing, probably user-friendly, though untested yet. Not in gentoo as of june 2008

[edit] avidemux

At least it can opens a *.avi

Test 10 nov 2006, media-video/avidemux-2.1_pre1: 'avidemux *.avi' opens the divx, you can see th first frame. You can play it , with sound (alsa/arts)

It's hard-masked on gentoo (as of 2007-07-26, media-video/avidemux-2.3.0)

[edit] EKD

Post production, but can do some basic editing, and is said to be easy and friendly.

[edit] Content Creation

Two are cited the most : kino and cinelerra. A new one is coming up: Pitivi.

[edit] kino

Kino is a non-linear DV editor I can't even load a avi("failed to load media file") It seems it can only read "DV", not divx.

[edit] pitivi

The new one. Screenshots are promising. According to the wiki it's heavily worked on today (2007-07-26). Test 2007-07-26, media-video/pitivi-0.10.3.

Install flawlessly in gentoo. Gtk based.
drag&dropping *avi on the "drag your clip here" zone, gives nothing.
But you can use the menu and it works. (the sound is ugly)
It can plays, with sound, the files imported.
You can choose the size, audio and video codec in the preference dialog.
You can't do much more than watching.
No crash, one hang (while a divx is playing, double click on another one)

Updated 2007-08-20: (pitivi-0.10.3) If fails with

Error: Icon 'misc' not present in theme

whatever i do.

[edit] cinelerra

They ask for a dual 2.4Gh/4gbram 200g/hd 2007-07-26 : media-video/cinelerra-cvs-2007060 wont install (compile error)

[edit] kdenlive

  • 'non linear', use PIAVE
  • handle SMIL
  • i can add a divx to the list, but can't do anything with it. Not even watch it.

This is basically a piave(xml) editor. The rendering will be done by another app(piave). test 10 nov 2006, media-video/kdenlive-0.3.0: "open a file" will not show *.avi files.

[edit] lives

Not said to be very good. orzel, test 10 nov 2006, media-video/pitivi-0.10.3:

 lives test.avi
This doesn't appear to be a valid video or image file

[edit] piave : Piave Is A Video Editor

Take a xml file describing the rendering to be done, and do it. It's call a "scenelist". Piave is a command line tool

[edit] cinepaint

Said to be used at Hollywood. This is a frame editor, based on gimp. You can edit the movie frame by frame. It works on directory full of frames in separated files. Typically images have a width of 2000 pixels and 16 bits for each color. Which is 3*16 bits/pixel !

[edit] Jahshaka

Use Qt

The wiki is dead, lot of dead link on the main page (bugtracker!)

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jahshaka

not in gentoo, but there is some overlays : (seems to be a reaaaaal mess, though) http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-559585-highlight-jahshaka.html

[edit] Vocabulary

DV
Is the name of a code. Handled by 'libdv' under linux.
dvgrab
smil
xml specification that you use to describe a montage. Like "take the part from time t1 to t2 in movie A and fade it to part (t3,t4) of movie B. Or : the sound from movie A is going up here, then down, then up again and suddenly stops at time XX. Some other software will do the actual work described. It's the same difference as in kpovmodeler (modeler -> write a description) and pov (actual rendering)
