[edit] The big ones

[edit] Ekiga previously gnomemeeting

Stable version: linux only. Dev version: windows & Linux (the windows snapshot )

Free software. originally based on h323, now use SIP as well. Does not support IPv6.

handle firewall. The only one doing video conferencing for free ?

2007-12-17/orzel : did some test with 2.0.11 : the interface is really weird, you never know what the status is (connected ? not?) or what happens. You can do "tools/view history" to try to understand a little more. We only managed to do a connection between two pcs on the same ethernet link. We tried with both freephonie and ekiga providers. One compute has a working webcam, but we did not manage to make the video stream reached the other end.

[edit] linphone

Supports IPv6, which very few other do. Can use speex. A nightmare to compile. Under gentoo, neither the official tree nor the voip layout never compiles here.

[edit] Google talk

Uses open protocols althoug right now, you can only talk with googletalk users.

Windows only.

Requires a gmail account.

[edit] Apple iChat

macintosh only, though bundled with osx.

SIP

[edit] Pidgin (formerly gaim)

Doesn't do Voip, does it? 2007-12-17/orzel : It's said it supports google talk, but i did not manage to create the account for this. There is not place for 'login', only password. (?????)

[edit] Twinkle

softphone, sip, under GPL, linux only. Doesn't support ipv6. Still uses qt3. Seems well integrated with kde.

[edit] OpenWengo

They want to be the free software equivalent of skype. The protocols are open, the client is in Qt4 and ported to windows and Linux. KDE support and integration into kopete is under discussion. This is a french company.

You need a account at openwengo. (for the 1.x)

2006-07-20/orzel : couldn't compile the 2.0 preversion here on gentoo/qt4. 2007-12-17/orzel : there's only a binary in gentoo now. Ugly interface, doesn't work.

[edit] The dead ones

[edit] Kphone

linux, quite simple, is it still developed? Latest news on the site from mid-2006.

[edit] Microsoft netmeeting

still there?? was using h323 and interoperable with gnomemeeting.

[edit] The really bad ones(tm)

[edit] Skype

Linux, windows, bsd, Macintosh

Evil proprietary soft doing bad stuff in your back based on SIP(bus use proprietary stuff?) + clever way of

Good for dealing with firewall/NAT: actually works (most of the time). Most recent beta supports alsa and video, even on linux. 2007-12-17/orzel : the video doesn't work under linux with most 64bits system.

[edit] microsoft messenger

Windows only.
